can't get it to work

I've tried multiple times and have never gotten postgresql to work on my computer. I probably should delete and reinstall postgresql and I tried but there is some leftover file on my comp, how do I completely get rid of it? When i try to convert it i either get: error connecting to HH database transaction already connected, or another one that isn't showing up now. Suggestions?

I'm running vista and have disabled UAC

What version of PT are you using? 2.17.02?

Open the Utilities > PostgreSQL Settings window.
What values have you entered into the ODBC Entry To Use and the Encoding fields.

I'm using 2.17.01g. When I open that window I'm using PostgreSQL Unicode and Unicode. When i go to convert i get the message saying can't connect to default PostgreSQL database. 101 - SQLSTATE = 08001.

Close PT.
Go to the Start menu select Settings > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services
Find PostgreSQL 8.2 in the list. Does it says it's started? If not, try to start it. Does it work or give an error?

Sorry here's the whole error message.

Error connecting to the default PostgreSQL database:

101-SQLSTATE = 08001
could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061)
Is the server running on host "localhost" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?

This could be because you have...
1. Entered the wrong user name/password/server name/port
2. Not started the PostgreSQL database server
3. Not installed the PostgreAQL ODBC driver

I did the start service in settings. I got this error message.

Windows could not start the PostgreSQL databse server 8.2 service on local computer.

Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

At this point I don't know what the issue is.
Use the Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs window to uninstall PostgreSQL.
Then go to the c:\program files\postgresql\8.2 folder and delete any remnants of that folder that were left after the uninstall.
Then download and install PostgreSQL again.
