[quotegx7]Most importantly answer my question about which column is the restore reefering to. It is asked simplely in plain english. Yopu arn't reading the question![/quotegx7]

Then why didn't you say this the first time? I've asked you to stop making multiple posts before I've had time to answer but you don't seem to want to do that, you just keep adding on. And plain English? I don't think so. Try using a spell checker, it may make things easier to read.

[quotegx7]Is the naqme PTPGSQL1that the retore DB is refering to the PTPGSQL1 that is listed in the name column or the DB file/DB name/DSN column.[/quotegx7]

Yes.

Yes, I know, I'm very stupid to not understand your wonderful grasp on the English language.

The name column is the name description of the database that you have given it, this is a description only. The DB file/DB name/DSN Column field is the actual name of the PostgreSQL database. If the restore is asking to overwrite PTPGSQL1 then it's refering to the value in the DB file/DB name/DSN Column field.

OK
Now we're making a little progress. Now if you look at that original question there was a 2nd part. How do I restore to a DIFFERENT DB? PTPGSQL1 is the one I DON'T want to copy over.

You cannot do it. PTPGSQL1 is embedded into the restore file. There isn't a way to just tell the restore to create a new db and not overwrite the old one.

The only way to not overwrite PTPGSQL1 is to use the pgAdmin program to rename the PTPGSQL1 to something else and then do the restore at which point a new PTPGSQ1 will be created because it's no longer overwriting anything but creating a new db.

See this old forum post about renaming the database.

Now I'm getting this lovely message when I query to change name.

ERROR: current database cannot be renamed

********** Error **********

ERROR: current database cannot be renamed
SQL state: 0A000

Why? And what do I need to do differently?

Close the pgAdmin window and then reopen it. You CANNOT be connected to the database you want to rename. Click on the "postgres" database in the list then use the Tools > Query Tool menu option to enter the query to change the name of PTPGSQL1.

OK, close and reopen pgAdmin again.

In the list of databases, do you see the NEW database name, the one you just renamed? If you do then you should now be able to restore the file that contains the PTPGSQL1 database. This time, when you restore it, it shouldn't tell you that it's going to overwrite the other one, it should tell you it's going to create a new database with this name.
