Rent a dedicatet Server for a postgreSQL Database

I and a few guys want to rent a dedicated Database Server with one HM database on it. Now a few questions:

Is it possible that 5 guys are connecting to the same database at the same time?

How much space does one database require over the time per 100.000 Hands?

How much traffic does one Hand make? For example, if you are logging to this server from one host with 20 6-handed tables open.

Is it better to run the database on linux or Windows?

Maybe you should ask this on their forums? ;) Unless if you are going to ditch their poor software and use PT3.

If you are using a dedicated server, I would not worry about hard drive space. There will be plenty of space...

I am unsure about how much network traffic it will generate, I have never really tested/measured bandwidth usage between PT3 and PostgreSQL.

My concern would be:

1. Security
2. Network connection speed. You may encounter a great slowdown trying to connect to a remote database over the internet.

Definitely use Linux as a dedicated PostgreSQL server.

Sorry about that, we will run both. HM and PT3. And in the summer we will see which software is the best.

Actually it will be a virtual Server. So Space does matter.

So you think for a DSL User with 1Mb upstream it will not run good?

Note: You cannot have multiple users importing to the same database at the same time. If this is your plan, reconsider. Same server, no problem - same database, not currently, and AFAIK not planned.

I would think 1MB up is sufficient, you won't know until you try. I think Derek was talking more about response time (ping etc.) that if too large may cause PT3 to just wait around all the time for transaction confirmations from the server.

Need many more details on the plan if you want advice, but imo you'd be better off running a local database server.

it is one user account connecting from different hosts at the same time.

I am testing it right now with this other poor software. I have installed the database at my PC and a friend is connecting over the Internet to the same Database with the same useraccount. We do not have any problems right now.
